Hello friends!
We made it through September! Just a few updates as we recover from the whirlwind…
Thank you so much to those who were able to come see Barbed Wire Fence Telephone II and/or attend one of the events associated with the exhibition - we had such a great turnout for everything! Our estimate puts us at about 400 (!) people engaging with the exhibition in some way over the course of the month, including completely full houses for both Nathan Schneider and Cheryl Higashida’s talks. We’ve got recordings of all the speakers as well as a fun timelapse of the construction of the fence up on our Vimeo channel.
MAL Managing Director libi was interviewed about her work and the lab in general by MAL friend Stephen Cass at IEEE for the “5 Questions” feature. Read that here: spectrum.ieee.org/vintage-tech. (And if you’ve ever seen the HBO special From the Earth to the Moon playing in the back room, you’ve got Stephen to thank for that).
We were very happy to host a research visit earlier this year from Skeuomorph Press & BookLab for their whitepaper “Surveying the Humanities MakerLab Movement”, which is now available here at Humanities Commons.
We are FINALLY shipping out our booklet “Build Your Own Mini FM Transmitter”, albeit in small batches so as not to overwhelm the post office… If you’d like to check out the PDF, you can find it here on othernetworks.net.
And, for the MAL reading list book of the month we have Clyde W. Ford’s Think Black: A Memoir. As always, share your thoughts about your reading on the othernetworks.net blog post or on our social media posts.
Bye for now, we’ll be back in November!
