March Mac-ness!
Hi Friends - Hope you had a happy leap day! We’ve got some news-y things for you - new acquisitions, the next book for the Other Networks book club, a recap of our February practitioner-in-residence, and an upcoming virtual talk from our current resident.
New Acquisitions!
We were so fortunate to be able to take on a collection of beautifully maintained Apple computers. We were given these devices in memory of Kathleen Ward, a 1995 graduate of CU Boulder, by her father. This donation includes many things we’ll be excitedly cataloging over the next several weeks, but some highlights include: A Macintosh Color Classic, an Apple PowerCD player, and a complete in-box 20th Anniversary Macintosh.
March Book Club!
We’ll be starting on Claire L. Evans’ Broad Band: The Untold Story of the Women Who Made the Internet this month. Feel free to read along and comment on the othernetworks.net post for the book or join us on our various social media accounts under the hashtag #MALbookclub.
Practitioners-in-Residence!
Our February resident Becca Ricks had to go home last week, but not before giving a fantastic talk and workshop with/about her knitting machine and the intersection of technology and fiber arts. UNFORTUNATELY we had a series of tech failures that meant virtual participation did not work out as we intended. So, to make up for that, Becca made a video of the talk and slides for us to share out to you all:
In addition to that - as Becca left, Aaron Tucker joined us to do some work with FORTRAN and a 1980s facial recognition program. Aaron has been posting about his experience in the lab to our Instagram and will also be presenting a short virtual talk on his work on Friday, March 8 at 1:30 pm Mountain time. If you’d like a reminder about that, please rsvp to mediaarchaeology+rsvp@colorado.edu.
In addition to all this, we’ve really been busy with visitors - both students and folks from the community - but we always want to see more folks come through! Please do come by during our open house hours if you’re in the area and that’s your thing. Our open house hours are still listed on our Mastodon pinned post and regularly updated with changes and closures as needed.
Anyhow, have a lovely March, we’ll talk to you soon -
