Issue 2 of the ephemerMAL zine is available!

If you happen to be able to come by the lab, a limited number of both zines will be available to grab starting August 8. If not, though - both an online viewable and a printable version are available at archive.org. We got even more excellent submissions this time around, so please do check it out!

page spread from ephemerMAL 2. has "Buying Diodes" collage art by Ash Watson, an image of a diode, and a piece of short fiction from Skot Armstrong

On that note - the prompt for issue 3 is live!

Email us with submissions of short writing (less than 1000 words, please) or visual art. The prompt: one of our many conference swag buttons:

a white button with a red circle & strikethrough over a grayscale drawing of sneakers, with white text saying "no sneakernet" and black text saying "ForComment Document Review Software"

We Had a Visiting Scholar!

Dr. Will Mari came to visit for a week in July, mostly to look at things in our collection related to word processing and to the TRS-80 Model 100 (if you follow the lab on Twitter, you may have seen both our process of pulling books from the shelves for him and his images of those books).

He says: “As a media historian, visiting the MAL was a phenomenal experience. The machines, printed material and software are all lovingly curated and maintained, and the volunteer staff exceptionally helpful. I highly recommend it to my academic colleagues, and really to anyone who cares about the larger story of technology in our society.”

In other news around the lab:

  • We’re continuing our collaboration with the folks from the Eamon wiki, imaging some disks from our collection that haven’t been properly researched before. Unfortunately a couple (like the one below) have damage that can’t be resolved, but they’ve already been able to research some previously un-looked-at files.

  • We hosted a group of 35 8-11 year old summer camp kids early this week who (as that age often does) gave us great energy for heading in to the fall semester. As one of our visitors said - "My brain hurts but I have never been so inspired".

  • And, on that note, we are in fact headed in to fall semester. If you are on the CU campus and would like to do a class visit - or if you are from another campus and would like to do a virtual visit - please do get in touch. Our schedule fills up fast!

Bye for now, more soon!
