MAL POST: April 2019
Thanks for being a friend of the lab!
Our volunteer crew continues to work on wonderful things, we have had more awesome artists-in-residence, and we always have great student
(& non-student) visitors. The class tally is up to 11 for the semester! We also had a new PAL join our team, so
Wednesday hours have extended. We have some newly functional devices and have gotten our micro-computers set up for easier use. We also started the work necessary to make our collection of software more stable & easier to access!
What is a Feminist Lab?
The What is a Feminist Lab? symposium (co-organized in part by MAL PALS Maya and Lori) is coming up soon!
Mark your calendar for April 17 & 18, and check the website for schedule, locations and speakers!
MAL Publications!
MAL PALs libi and Lori have an article in the International Journal of Digital Humanities titled Anarchive as Technique | Building a One Laptop Per Child mesh network. They centered their work around the lab's collection of OLPC XOs.
The article can be accessed here.
PALs helping pals...
MAL PAL Will was able to help a friend diagnose and re-furbish his Osborne 1. One of our favorite things to do, make old things work like new!
If you have a computer you think we can help with, please feel free to reach out!
April's Featured Device: The Canon Cat
Ezra Shapiro, in A Spiritual Heir to the Macintosh, wrote the following:
"The Cat represents an eye-opening new approach to data storage and retrieval; it will surprise anyone who thought that interface design was a dying art."
And the advertising for it was really something...
Survey says...
Have you visited the lab? Would you like to visit the lab, but our open hours don't match your schedule? Would you come more often if we were open at different times?
Please respond to our quick survey and so we can gauge how our open hours are working for our friends!
Ongoing request...
As we grow in people power, our ability to maintain and repair devices in-house expands. To keep up with the skills of our PALs, we have put together a wishlist for tools & general lab needs. If you have always wanted to contribute to the lab but didn't have tech to send our way, consider this your chance!
Our wishlist can be found here!
