MAL Post: March 2019 Newsletter

Thanks for being a friend of the lab! We have some great new projects in the works, and have had so many great visitors over the past month.
So far this semester we've had
8 class visits, 2 artist residencies, and 1 off-site event. In the next month we have 8 more class visits,
3 off-site events, and 3 more artist residencies. None of this would be possible without our wonderful and dedicated volunteer crew!
We did a major re-organization of our storage and work area, so that we can do more & better in-house repair and restoration, rearranged our gaming nook to put 4 more consoles on display, and shuffled our PC collection to make room for a monitor to hook up the micro-computers to.

The Friden is back!!!
Through the dedication of our PAL Chris Torrence, and the assistance of donor Harry Edwards, our Friden calculator is repaired. The road has been a long one but we are happy to report that it's back in the lab. To see Harry explain the process, check out Chris's YouTube channel and podcast Assembly Lines.

Upcoming events
Take it Apart(y)! 6 PM, March 7 at the ATLAS BTU Lab
Breakout session on the history of women in computer science at the Art & Feminism ARTHYVE Wikipedia Editathon. All day, March 10 at the McNichol's Building, Civic Center Park.
"A Hands-On Guide to Media Archaeology" at LEAF, Saturday March 16.
Also, save the date for the Feminist Labs Symposium! Symposium runs 9-5 April 17 and lab tours April 18!

March Featured Device:
The Apple IIGS
Our rockstar PAL Chris has the Apple IIGS running in top shape. Ours now has a CFFA3000 card installed with a USB "hard drive", so we have a whopping 32 MB of games and software for you to test!
For contemporaneous reporting on the IIGS, see this 1986 article by David D. Thornberg in Compute! magazine.

New stuff to check out...
In addition to the Friden calculator and the re-furbished IIGS, we have an XBOX and a SEGA Dreamcast up and running in our game corner!
If productivity tools are more your style, our reorganization project revealed lots of new mobile and hand-held devices to add to our display. Come try out a Cybiko Wireless Inter-Tainment system or a Matsucom onHand Wearable PC!

A request...
As we grow in people power, our ability to maintain and repair devices in-house expands. To keep up with the skills of our PALs, we have put together a wishlist for tools & general lab needs. If you have always wanted to contribute to the lab but didn't have tech to send our way, consider this your chance!
Our wishlist can be found here!
