MAL Post: February 2019 Newsletter
NEW YEAR, NEW PALS, NEW STUFF!
Thanks for being a friend of the lab! This year has already been a busy one - we have more MAL PAL volunteers than ever, lots of new projects, some great new devices, and so many new ways for students and community members to learn, interact, and play!
We are able to do so much more, thanks to our new volunteers!
We have been working hard on restoring and repairing devices in the lab to get them in great condition for students, visitors, artists and researchers to use - for work, learning & play! Our roster of artists and scholars in residence is packed this spring, and our schedule for class visits is more full than ever!
A huge part of this is our expanding volunteer crew - we have more volunteers than ever, which means more open hours and more hands helping out around the lab. Our PALs do everything from host open house hours to fix devices to help organize our cable drawers, and come from the University and beyond.

Making in the lab
One of last year's artists-in-residence, Sarah Rooney, published her booklet of crochet patterns for soft computers at the beginning of the year. Can't recommend them enough if you need a smiley computer friend in your life! Download your own copy here to start stitching!
Research in the lab
Scholar-in-residence Sytze Van Herck visited us at the end of last semester to do some user testing with the Apple IIe. Her fantastic blogpost on her experience and work at the lab can be found here.
New stuff to check out...
We are always getting new devices in the lab - some of our newest acquisitions include this IBM Simon proto-smart phone, an Amstrad GX4000 game console, and a Microvision handheld game console. We have also made sure that our PC collection is in the best shape possible, including new boot disks for the IBM PC. Come play with us!
Fun with oscilloscopes!
Our PAL Chris has been experimenting with our repair tools, in addition to the computers. Check out his video here!
