MAL_x Tech Microgrants - Call for proposals!
We are pleased to offer MAL_x Tech microgrants for research and/or creative projects exploring the intersection of technology and marginalized identities (race, gender, disability, class). We are offering funding up to $1500 with preference given to projects that a) specifically utilize the resources the MAL collection has to offer and that b) sit at the juncture of _ x Tech. These grants are open to graduate students, faculty and staff at CU Boulder, and those in the wider Colorado region (including neighboring states). We are open as to what form the work can take (critical, creative, pedagogical, etc) and we will happily publicize outputs on our website and on social media.
Please note that while successful applicants need to be U.S. permanent residents in order to receive grant monies, do get in touch with us if you are on a visa and we will do our best to come up with an alternative arrangement.
Thanks to donations by Brad Feld, Vint Cerf, Google, and ongoing support by the English Department and the College of Media, Communication and Information, we are fortunate we can continue these efforts during 2021.
If you would like to be considered for one of these grants, please send the following materials to <mediaarchaeology@colorado.edu> by November 1, 2021:
max. 500-word proposal detailing the work you would like to undertake related to
MAL and the intersection of technology and marginalized identities (race, gender,
disability, class);
a brief budget; funds may be used to cover equipment, a modest stipend, or other
expenses related to your research at the MAL;
a max. 100-word bio.
Please note every grant recipient is required to produce a MAL Technical Report (length is completely open) detailing results of their work; these must be submitted to us by February 1, 2022. If you have any questions, contact MAL Manager libi striegl at <mediaarchaeology@colorado.edu>.
And a bit of whimsy...
We've been making weekly color palettes from our machines, including one based off the pdp 8/e we now house on long-term loan. These have been a great way to explore the collection from a different perspective, thinking about their overall design and the color choices that give each machine a distinctive (or not so distinctive) character.
